Brakes Are An Essential Part Of Our Lives
Most people are well aware that when you drive a motor vehicle it will have a brake, and also a clutch - as long as it does not have an automatic gearbox in which case it only has the brakes.
What most people may not realise is that many other pieces of equipment also require a brake and a clutch, including things such as cranes, for instance. That is understandable if you are not an engineer, but they are essential in order for everything to work as it should.
So, if you are operating a crane from a cab 100 feet or more above the ground, there has to be a way to stop it when it lowers a heavy item, or any item really, to the ground - or the other way around, when it has lifted the load to whatever height is required. For that, you need a brake and a clutch. There are also many other pieces of equipment that are needed to swing the jib around and to run the load out along the jib to wherever it needs to be, and that includes a brake and clutch too.
When you stop to think about it, brakes are needed for more or less anything which is driven by a motor. So, for instance, when you get into a lift in your local department store it uses a brake to stop the lift when it reaches the floor you have selected. Brakes are also needed in wind turbines so that they can be stopped when required. Even an aircraft uses brakes when it comes in to land – first air brakes, and then brakes to stop the wheels once it has landed on the tarmac. In fact, pretty much anything which moves and is driven by a motor, needs brakes.
